A comment to one of my previous posts “Gluten free grain. Soaking is important” reminded me of an article I read a while back. It was a case report from the Department of Internal Medicine and the Departments of Nuclear Medicine and Psychiatry of Catholic University in Rome.
Report covers a case of a patient with Schizophrenia, her symptoms included autistic behavior, affective flattening, hallucinations and telepathic thoughts, among others. She was admitted with severe diarrhea and weight loss.
After she was diagnosed with Celiac disease and treated with gluten-free diet, within few days, her physical as well as psychiatric symptoms have improved. Six month later, still on the gluten-free diet her blood work returned to normal, patient was able to gain weight, and most amazingly she was taken of of her medications without recurrence of schizophrenic symptoms. A year later she was still asymptomatic!

Could this apply to Autistic disorder?! Other neurological disorders?
My hope is that after reading this article, people will realize the potential benefits of gluten-free diet for many other conditions. And if someone who has a loved with a neurological disorder, will try treating them with gluten-free diet. After all this is the least invasive, easiest, healthiest and definitely the most beneficial “no harm” done option to try for any condition not just neurological.
